Grazed perennial grasslands can match current beef production while contributing to climate mitigation and adaptation

چکیده
Abstract The U.S. grain‐finished beef system is highly productive but has many negative consequences for human health and well‐being because it pollutes surface groundwaters, exacerbates flooding, reduces biodiversity, contributes to climate change. Moving the entire grain‐fed production a grass‐finished possible without displacing food under conservative soil carbon (C) change estimates would result in reduced similar C footprint, while improving health, water quality, biodiversity. More optimistic accumulation indicate significant atmospheric drawdown. Agroecological transformation like this limited only by our imagination policies that incentivize agriculture public good rather than profits few.

Climate change and grasslands: impacts, adaptation and mitigation
The paper reviews recent evidence on climate change and the role of greenhouse gases (GHG). Historical evidence indicates that climate change is not a new phenomenon and Mediterranean ecosystems have shown considerable resilience to past climate changes. The 21st century can be regarded as an era of climate change in which concerns about climate are accompanied by other drivers relating to glob...
متن کاملContributing to the Mitigation of Climate Change Using Rangeland Management
Arational approach to responding to the uncertainty of climate change requires attention to both mitigation and adaptation activities. Mitigation, in contrast to adaptation, involves the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and enhancement of greenhouse gas sinks.1 The goal of mitigation is to stabilize atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at a level that would prevent human interference ...
متن کاملIntroduction to Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options
Climate is a critical factor shaping the structure and function of forest ecosystems in the Southern United States. Human induced changes in climate systems have resulted in an increase in the global average air temperature of about 0.8°C since the 1900s (Pachuri and Reisinger 2007). Data from long-term weather stations show that overall, the continental United States has warmed during the past...
متن کاملIntegrating Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation with Urban planning for a Livable city in Tehran
Climate change impacts are seen within growing numbers of cities in low- and middle-income countries, so there is growing interest in the adaptation and mitigation plans and programs put forward by city authorities. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the constraints which cities face them in this subject by analyzing the case of Tehran. City has a commitment to decentralizatio...
